As they say, hindsight is a wonderful thing! And they (whoever ‘they’ are), are not wrong. After nearly 25 years of work since University, including starting a couple of businesses and selling one to date, I’ve got so much to learn!
We often get so buried in the day to day, that we forget the myriad of essential building blocks required to be kept in check, in order to create, build, maintain and ultimately sell a business. It can be a real challenge to keep all of the plates spinning, regardless of the size or stage of the business. In addition, you might be juggling where you are at. What we can be fairly sure of however, is that business is tough.
Have you ever contemplated taking time out from general daily life and putting that time into some extended time away with your family unit? If the time away won’t create long-term financial stress and in terms of your work is somehow doable, then rather than going over and over it in your mind, just stop.
“Why don’t you go away with the boys?” Now I can’t say that I listen 100% of the time in our household, however this really did make me sit up. My (ex)wife was right. During the next week, I had some time available and our son was on school holidays. Plus to be fair (and this was my wife’s underlying reason), I had been feeling pretty stressed in general.
If someone asked me out of the blue, “What were your career crossroads moments in life”, I would have to give that some thought in order to define those specific times, events and chapters that forced big decisions or adjustments. For some people, an experience of losing a job that you desperately need and/or enjoy, must be extremely difficult, hopefully the opportunity for a change in work circumstances can also be viewed as exciting, even if tinged with a natural degree of trepidation, no matter what your situation.
The other day, I was listening to an audiobook in the car, when the narrator mentioned the word ‘success’. Continuing what seems to be a ‘reflective’ part of life currently, it got me thinking about how I might define the word success or indeed whether I felt successful.
